Getting Help on Microsoft Productivity Software
The other day I was bogged down with Microsoft Word. You mean, you too you are having difficulties in getting the best out of MsWord? I was trying to do Mail-merge. That feature that allows you to mass-mail personalized letters to contacts. I got round it. Not only that, I also learnt how to better search for tutorials.
Let me show you quickly what I did.
I discovered that Universities in developed countries especially U.S. routinely post tutorials on software on their websites which include MsWord.
- I also recognized that with Google, you could limit your search to university websites only by simply adding site:edu to the keywords
- More importantly, Google also allow for search for synonyms of words. The one that was of value to me then was tutorials. So, in order to capture other web sites with keywords like HELP, TIPS, TRICKS, GUIDE ... I simply used the searched for synonyms of TUTORIALS by adding this ~ with the keyword i.e. ~tutorials
- I decided to to focus on MsWord 2003. I typed in the full name and the edition together as a phrase i.e. "Microsoft word 2003". In most search Engines you must use "..." in order to search for the exact phrase.
- Finally, I also needed to specify Mail Merge because that was the area of interest.
- The final search terms used in Google looked more like this
"Microsoft Word 2003" ~tutorials site:edu "Mail merge" - I got what I wanted.
- Try searching for tutorials on MsPowerPoint
You may click here for a comprehensive search on Google tutorials
Mathematics - Modules
Centre for Innovation in Mathematics Teaching provides free access to MEP Help Modules. Ilan Samson and David Burghes do expositions on misconceptions in people's understanding of mathematics which ultimately give rise to errors. The authors have identified 24 of those most commonly found and of these, the first 8 are listed . The others will follow as they become available. Each of the documents to which these titles are linked provides an explanation of how the misconception arises so easily, together with some exercises aimed at reinforcing the correction needed. It is hoped that a study of the reason, together with practice of the exercises, will help to eliminate these errors.

Open and Free Online Tutorials
I have benefitted immensely from the professional ingenuity of my mentor Mr. Samuel Eyitayo, FNLA. With him I have been able to understand the complexities of using web resources to complement existing services in the library. With dogged determination I have overcome the monster called "limitations". You too can do the same.
In this blog, I shall always be willing to share some of the things I have learnt from following his blogs. They are the minutest things we don't consider in the course of carrying out our research works.
He says "one of the quickest ways of enhancing professional practices via the Internet is by running self-taught free online short courses". But you may wonder how could one get such courses? Very simple...
- Visit Youtube.com and enjoy free lectures - but there is the problem of bandwidth for professionals in the third world. Search through Google, there are about 558,000
- Visit any social bookmarks. My favourite is Delicious.com. Check out some of the ones I got. How? I visited www.delicous.com. Conducted a search using the following keywords: free online courses. That is it!
- You could also try out Google search on the same keywords. The result is huge! (122,000,000)
- Here is another search results (99,000,000) using the following keywords: Free OR open courses
- Any other trick?

Why Must I Learn Math?
Mathematics has been described as the foundation of science and technology and a pre-requisite for modern industrial, economic and social development. It plays major role in the process of economic growth and technological development. The critical role mathematics plays in both technological and economic development suggests that any society that is unable to understand and speaks the grammar of mathematics will be unable to communicate and interact with the rest of the world. While I was going through the web to search for resources that could help my users to gain better understanding of the subject. I came across this site provided by Mark Karadimos. Find out why the subject is important and made compulsory at both primary and secondary education, not only that and why it is central to many professions.
